🍮 Creamy Vanilla Custard with Chocolate Chips

Ingredients

  • 2½ cups whole milk
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 3 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • ½ cup mini chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Heat the milk
    In a medium saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until warm but not boiling.
  2. Mix egg yolks
    In a bowl, whisk together egg yolks, sugar, and cornstarch until smooth and pale.
  3. Temper the eggs
    Slowly pour about half of the warm milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly. Then pour the mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining milk.
  4. Cook the custard
    Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and coats the back of a spoon (about 5–7 minutes). Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla extract.
  5. Add chocolate chips
    Let the custard cool slightly, then fold in chocolate chips.
  6. Chill
    Transfer custard into serving cups and refrigerate for at least 2 hours until set.
  7. Serve
    Optionally, sprinkle extra chocolate chips or cocoa powder on top before serving.
